Health Gorilla in Action
Health Gorilla is a nationwide Qualified Health Information Network (QHIN) and interoperability platform that enables standardized clinical data exchange across hundreds of connected networks and systems through a unified, FHIR-based architecture. Our mission is to make trusted health data more accessible by supporting interoperability at national scale without requiring organizations to manage individual network connections.
At its core, Health Gorilla operates a high-availability FHIR server that provides patient matching, data normalization, and secure message routing across connected networks. The platform supports both near–real-time and asynchronous exchange patterns, enabling organizations to retrieve and contribute patient records through standardized workflows rather than direct point-to-point integrations.
Challenges We Help You Solve
Health Gorilla addresses key interoperability challenges so your organization can focus on delivering care.
- Access a complete patient record: Our record retrieval solutions—Patient360, Patient Chart Viewer, and Individual Access Service (IAS)—bring together a patient’s longitudinal data from national networks and labs on demand.
- Stay updated as new information arrives: Our subscription services—Clinical Alerts and ADT Notifications—deliver patient activity notifications using event-driven workflows, including FHIR Subscription–based delivery and file-based transport such as SFTP, depending on configuration.
- Streamline ordering and results delivery: Our orders and results solution, Lab Network, provides a single interface for diagnostic test ordering and delivers normalized results directly into the shared FHIR core.
- Manage a multi-facility enterprise: Built-in multi-tenant configuration, role-based access, and centralized monitoring help large organizations control identities, permissions, and data flows across all locations.
These capabilities reflect Health Gorilla’s mission to simplify interoperability and make trusted health data available at scale across the nation.
Protecting Every Exchange
All transactions are protected with end-to-end encryption, tenant isolation, and full audit logging. Health Gorilla is HIPAA compliant and maintains HITRUST and SOC 2 Type II certifications. The platform participates in TEFCA and aligns with the NIST Cybersecurity Framework, and its cloud-native architecture provides geographic redundancy and enterprise-scale performance. A dedicated sandbox, developer portal, and onboarding support simplify implementation and integration.
Delivering Complete Clinical Data
Health Gorilla retrieves and delivers multiple types of clinical data, normalizing records and tagging them with provenance for filtering, audit, and reuse.
- Medical: Encounter summaries, care plans, clinical notes, and procedures retrieved from connected EHR systems and networks such as Carequality, CommonWell, eHealth Exchange, and TEFCA-enabled exchanges
- Laboratory: Diagnostic orders and results retrieved from national and regional laboratories
- Medications and Immunizations: Prescription and administration information documented in EHR or network records
- Admissions, Discharges, and Transfers (ADT): Hospital admission, discharge, and transfer notifications delivered through HL7 v2–based ADT feeds or event-driven delivery mechanisms, depending on configuration
- Point-of-Care Contributions: Structured FHIR resources or documents submitted directly by participating organizations when contributing data outside of network exchange
Built for Seamless Integration
Your organization can integrate with Health Gorilla in several ways:
- FHIR API: Build direct integrations for programmatic retrieval, shareback, and analytics
- Embedded Viewer: Launch the Patient Chart Viewer inside an EHR or portal using SMART on FHIR or an iFrame to display external records alongside local data
- User Interface: Access aggregated patient records through a secure web-based UI that requires no development work
- Ordering Portal: Place lab orders and view results without managing multiple lab interfaces
By combining nationwide network connectivity, advanced patient-matching, and a central FHIR core, Health Gorilla enables developers and healthcare enterprises to deliver complete, real-time clinical information wherever it is needed—supporting care coordination, population health programs, and consumer-directed data access.
